In form Aussies hit top spot after victory over China

December 7, 2017

Australia went joint top of the section after they recovered from an early scare to see off China. An early goal from Nathan Price was cancelled out by Zhiheng Chen, however the team in green rarely looked back from the moment they took the lead through Zac Mohring. Mohring went on to score a hat-trick, Ryan Merriman scored five, Robinson, Almond and Lyall also got in on the act.

The match started at a high tempo with the ever vocal Australian support making themselves heard, as they hoped to cheer their team on to their second successive victory. It didn't take long for them to get on the front foot. Nathan Price chased down what appeared to be a lost cause and despite being sandwiched by defender and goalkeeper, he emerged with the ball and placed it into the unguarded net.

To their credit, China certainly didn't fold despite the early setback. They dug in and enjoyed a decent spell of possession, although the Aussies did look extremely dangerous on the counter attack. A few minutes later, the Chinese got their goal. A loose ball inside the area was blasted home by Zhiheng Chen, to level the scores.

At this stage the game looked like it could go either way and the next goal was vital. Xingsen Zhang in the China goal played the 'sweeper keeper' role to good effect on a number of occasions, racing out of his goal and making crucial interventions. To the delight of the Australian support, it was a man in green who was next on target. Zac Mohring followed Price's example and put himself in where it hurt. Mohring was floored but he got a vital touch and the ball found its way into the back of the net.

From this point onwards the green shirts swamped the players in red, giving them very little time on the ball. The pressure started to pay off with Alexander Robinson and Mohring adding to the scoring. The goal of the game came next as Ryan Merriman fired a long range wonder-strike off the crossbar and in, to leave Australia sitting pretty at half-time.

Half time: Australia 5-1 China

China had enjoyed a better spell towards the end of the first half, but they were given no time to settle as the second half kicked off. Tayden Lyall and Mohring, who completed his hat-trick, scored goals in the first couple of minutes to put the tie to bed.

It was hard to see China coming back from here and so it proved. Next on the goal trail was Ryan Merriman, who scored two quickfire goals to join Mohring in club hat-trick. He didn't stop there, adding two more, to bring his tally to five after Price had scored his second.

Jake Almond then opened his account, before quickly doubling it. And finally, Robinson scored his second of the game to round off the scoring.

A comprehensive victory for Australia, who didn't let their standards slip at any point despite the scoreline. For China, they have the opportunity to bounce back later today as they take on USA in today's final match.
